Summer Skincare - maintain that glow!

Between the beautiful sunshine, warmer temperatures and the clogging effect that masks have on our skin, we’ve got our work cut out this summer when it comes to getting that natural glow. We sweat, we put our masks on, we sweat inside the masks, and so the painful cycle goes on – and our skin suffers for it. Summer is also about soaking up that vitamin D, and it’s easy to get carried away in countries like the UK where we don’t perceive the sun as being that strong. It’s important that we limit and repair the damage caused by those rays. Enter organic skincare.

I am currently expecting twins, and I learnt the hard way last weekend that pregnancy skin is far more sensitive than normal when it comes to the sun. EEK – pass the Aloe Vera!

Look after your natural beauty products

Before we get into looking after your skin, let’s talk about how to look after your natural beauty products. Your stash (especially waterless skincare as it has a lower melting point) will be far less effective if they are kept in a sunny windowsill or near a heat source. They will melt, change consistency and lose some of their wonderful healing powers. To avoid this, they should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. If you are really worried about them melting, put them in the fridge. Your skin (and wallet) will thank you. It's also lovely to put cold products on your skin if you have overdone it outside.

Give your skin what it needs

Exfoliate

Polish away dead skin and embrace the new once to twice per week (less if you have sensitive skin, listen to your body). Exfoliating is also a great way to get your circulation going and bring life to the skin across your whole body. Always remember to moisturise afterwards, unless you are using one of our Polishes, which do both. More about that later.

Unblock pores and boost your complexion with masks

As mentioned before, sweat, pollution and masks are a great recipe for clogged pores and blemishes. We believe that masking regularly is an essential part of your skincare routine to keep our complexion looking it’s best and give your skin a boost.

Stage one is to cleanse and release blocked pores, and we recommend clay masking once per week to help draw out toxins. This is especially relevant for those with oily and combination skin, where build up is more regular and more notably shiny. This will help to avoid break outs, as well as help any make up sit better on the skin without feeling too oily.

For us, stage two is always to polish away dead skin cells and replace the moisture lost from the clay – especially if your skin is feeling a little dry or sun damaged. Look for nourishing masks, rich in vitamins. Why not try our Skin Saviour Face Masking Duo for the ultimate fix?

Masking isn’t just for your face – and if you don’t mind getting a bit messy, treat yourself to a clay body mask. This will help to draw out toxins, soften and brighten your skin. Again, you can follow with one of our Body Polishes to scrub away dead skin cells and leave your body looking and feeling glowing.

Look for ingredients high in Essential Fatty Acids

As UV rays damage our skin and it’s naturally protective barrier, it’s important to make sure that we are giving our skin the best possible chance of recovery. Our body can’t create Essential Fatty Acids (EFA’s) on its own, but feeding them to the skin boosts cell regeneration and helps vitamin absorption. Look for oils like Hemp Seed, Broccoli Seed, Cucumber Seed and Wheatgerm, as well as Shea Butter. If you aren’t sure, do some research.

Stay hydrated

Remember that for your skin to look it’s best, you need to take a holistic approach. Giving your skin hydration from the inside is just as essential as from the outside.

Apply SPF

I’ve never been crazy about sun cream, but if you want to use extra protection, do it. I recently learned that SPF can be applied after moisturising to avoid the chemicals penetrating the skin – which has always been my main objection to it in the first place – so I think this summer, I’m converted.

Our summer top picks

Face and Body Scrubs that hydrate – clever, huh!

Our Face Polish has a Hemp and Shea Butter base, which means that it not only polishes away dead skin and balances sebum production with volcanic ash and bamboo stem powder, it also leaves your skin feeling hydrated and protected from harm. We choose to follow with our Facial Oil, but on the really hot days, you may choose to follow with nothing at all.

Our Body Polish – for the same reason. With its Hemp, Avocado and Shea Butter base, your skin will be left silky smooth and glowing after use. Again, it’s up to you if you follow with our Body Butter for the ultimate glow.

Non-clogging hydration

Give yourself a light but effective moisture and vitamin shot with our Facial Oil. Made with a selection of light, easily absorbed oils such as Rosehip, Evening Primrose and Wheatgerm, you won’t experience that extra pore clogging that comes with some heavier balms. A couple of drops of this will also give you a dose of antioxidants and help to prevent moisture loss throughout the day.

For sun-damaged or dehydrated skin that needs a boost while you sleep, try our Night Repair. Made with Broccoli, Cucumber and Rosehip oils, our balm is rich in vitamin A and works to smooth wrinkles as well as aid cell regeneration. It will also tackle inflammation and irritation. You only need a tiny little scoop!
